Dress Making

Basic Dress Making

Are you interested in making your own clothes? Have you tried online classes? Unfortunately there is no structure to those classes. There is no face to face interaction when you need help making sense of the vast array of commercial patterns available. Maybe you want to make an intricate blouse or a pair of designer slacks but don’t know how to make professional looking clothing? Then join me in my studio where I will teach dress making techniques like invisible zipper insertion, French seam, and flat felled seam. People will not ask “did you make it at home?” but instead, will ask " where you bought your clothes from".

This class runs year round. The first class of this series will be Introduction to Sewing Machine. You can join the series at any time in the year, provided you have previous knowledge of using sewing machine or have taken Introduction to Sewing Machine.

You will learn to take body measurements as well as trace and cut commercial patterns. Students will begin by learning about different types of foundational skirts, including: A-line, pencil, flared, and circle. You will choose a pattern from the collection of commercial patterns available that incorporate different techniques, such as: zipper insertion, lining, hemming, and adding a waist band. You will learn techniques of fitting a pattern to your body.

Once you have made your first skirt, you will make a basic blouse or shirt. Here you will learn to fit the pattern to your body measurements. Based on the requirements of the pattern you select, different techniques will be taught, such as front opening, back opening, button stand, and adding details like frills, ruffles, and pleats.

Next, we will make a basic dress or vest. After learning about different types of dresses, including cocktail dress, evening gown, and office wear. We will choose a basic dress (or vest) from the available commercial patterns.

Techniques learned will be adding facing, neckline variations, and sleeve variations. Lining and zipper insertion techniques learned in previous sessions will be reinforced. This series will end with making a basic pant with elastic waist.

Intermediate Dress Making

This class will begin by teaching style variations in basic skirts. We will learn about components such as yoke, pleats, godets, gores, and other details.

Details such as collars and necklines can drastically change the appearance of a basic blouse. Thus, this class will spend time on collars like flat, stand-up, Chinese, and roll over. Sleeve variations also can completely change how a piece of clothing looks and will be an area of focus.

Other focus areas will include: off-shoulder dress, cowl neck dress, shirt-dress, or wraparound dress. Long sleeve or ¾ sleeve will be emphasized.
For pants, adding darts and pleats allows us to change a basic pant with elastic waist. We will also learn to add waistband and belt to the basic pant.

Prerequisites: Basic Dress Making or demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

Class Duration: 2 hours per session
Price: $180 per every 4 session package
